It’s not difficult to build a wood TV stand

Making your own wooden TV stand is a simple do-it-yourself project that you can complete in a matter of hours. All you’ll need to successfully complete the project are a measuring tape, spirit level and know how to use a screwdriver and drill.

Alright, if you’ve got everything ready, then let’s get started:

Style

Determine the size of your wooden TV stand based on the size of your TV and the available space in the room.Plasma or flat screens require less space than the older style televisions but don’t forget to factor in the extra items like game stations or DVD players. Most TV units have at least one horizontal shelf, but its very straightforward to add two vertical shelves, meaning you don’t have to build a stand that’s too wide. .

Having sorted out the overall size and design for your unit, ask your wood merchant to cut to the required size.Remember that the top shelf of your TV stand will fit on top of the legs and the shelving underneath will fit inside the legs, so have your top shelf cut large enough to cover the diameter of each table leg.

Materials

Select hardwoods to build your TV stand if you plan to stain it, or you can build the stand from MDF or paint-grade plywood if a painted stand best fits your décor. For stands that measure up to 2 feet wide, you can use 3/4- to 2-inch thick plywood for the shelving with no braces beneath. However, for units wider than 2 feet wide then you’ll need to add braces to the shelves with metal brackets or wood slats to prevent bowing over time. Around every 14 to 22 inches across the width of the stand should be suitable support.

Purchase four table legs ready-made from your local DIY store andfor the shelf you’ll need four “L” shaped metal brackets. The only materials required to construct the stand are some wood screws, measuring tape, spirit level, drill and small drill bit and screw driver.Don’t forget to get some sandpaper (light and medium grade), primer or stain and paint to complete the look of your stand.

Putting it all together

Before you attach the shelves to the legs, insert your braces if you need them. You can attach the braces with wood screws.Anytime you’re inserting screws into wood, it’s a good idea to drill pilot holes so the screws go in easier and straighter. When the braces are in place, attach L brackets to the top of each table leg and along the inside of each leg, wherever you plan to place a shelf.

To attach the brackets, place them against the leg, mark the spots for the screws, drill a pilot hole and then insert the screws. As the brackets are fixed then start with the bottom shelf, attaching it to brackets.Work your way up the TV stand, attaching the shelves to the L brackets, making sure each one is level before moving on to the next.

Sand the wood tv cabinetwith first medium and then light-grade sandpaper before you stain or paint.

Enjoy your latest DIY project!
