Bosch Aquastar: Some of the Best Tankless Gas Hot Water Heaters

Thinking of getting a tankless hot water heater? You want to get good value for your money, and you want a heater that will provide you with all the hot water you need, without running out.

Bosch is one of the main manufacturers. Their gas ones, the Bosch Aquastar water heater line, are known to be well made with durable parts and to last for many years. Actually, tankless water heaters in general last over twice as long as the conventional tank kind, and if a tankless one does have some problem, it can usually be repaired.

When you are deciding what tankless unit to get, you need to consider several factors. If your situation will allow for a gas unit — either natural gas (NG) or propane (LP) — that will be more energy-efficient and better for the environment that an electric unit. There are two reasons for this: (1) the greater energy efficiency itself, and (2) electric units can stress the grid at peak times because they need a lot of power for a short time, to heat the water.

Another factor is how many different things you are going to need to do with hot water at the same time. If your household consists of one or two people, then consider a smaller tankless heater, like the Bosch Aquastar 1600P. It would also be a good choice for a vacation cabin.

If you want to be able to have two hot water activities going at the same time — two showers, say, or a shower and a load of dishes running in the dishwasher — then you might be better served by the Aquastar 2400ES. If your family is even larger, Bosch makes the 2700ES, which allows for three hot water uses simultaneously. Both the 2400ES and the 2700ES have received the Energy Star rating from the U.S. Department of Energy. These models qualify for tax credits of up to 10% of your cost through the end of 2010. It is also possible that your state or locality offers some kind of incentive as well.

Where you live also enters into the equation, because the temperature of the incoming water affects the results. The colder the water is, the more energy will be required to heat it. When water temperature needs to be increased a lot, then the resulting outflow to your shower may be less water. But if you size your heater correctly, you should be able to resolve this.

A high quality gas Bosch Aquastar water heater will cost at least twice as much as a conventional water heater, but it will likely last at least twice as long, and you will be saving energy all along. Exactly how much you’ll save depends on what your old system is, plus how expensive gas is in your area.
